Medical Student Testimonial

As a first year medical student at University of Queensland, I was very fortunate of having had the opportunity to do a 4-week elective in a very well known private neurosurgery clinic, Briz Brain and Spine at the Wesley hospital in Brisbane.

The education programs at BBS are very well designed. The Manager of Patient Services was so well organized that I was told a month in advance about the surgeries I will be watching during the 4 weeks I will be spending with them. The whole team at BBS was very welcoming and courteous.

I spent most of time in the theatres watching the neurosurgeons performing surgeries ranging from brain surgeries like tumour resection and deep brain stimulation to spinal surgeries like discectomy, laminectomy, and rhizolysis. During my time there I had the privilege to witness DBS on a patient with tourette syndrome, which is a very rare event to occur. I also had the opportunity to see the patient before and after surgery and I was quite surprised to see the extent to which this patient’s life was improved.

The surgeons at BBS gave me enough opportunity to learn live neuro anatomy by letting me scrub into surgeries. To test my knowledge I was constantly asked questions and asked to perform clinical examinations and interviews on patients. This gave me the opportunity to develop my clinical examination skills and increase my knowledge in the area of neurosurgery.

I would like to thank all the staff and surgeons at BBS for their precious time and also for the wonderful learning experience I was provided.
