My Neuro-Dynamic Week!

At BrizBrain & Spine, we are constantly encouraging and fostering the education of students through our University programs.  This week however, we had the pleasure of hosting Mackenzie, a Year 10 student from the Trinity Anglican School for a week of work experience.

Mackenzie travelled from Cairns to complete her placement with the Surgeons of Brizbrain and Spine and is aiming to become a Neurosurgeon specialising in Paediatrics.  Read about Mackenzie’s experiences with us.  We would also like to thank those who partnered with us in providing a comprehensive week for her namely Premion, Wesley Medical Imaging and the nursing staff of the Wesley Hospital.

We wish her every success in her future endeavours.

My Neuro-Dynamic Week!

It can be one of the most confusing and hardest decisions of our lives, deciding how exactly we plan to spend the hours, days and years on end…how do we want to contribute to society, giving back to our local or global communities. Thankfully however, my school Trinity Anglican School located in Cairns, Far North Queensland, offers students in Year 10 the opportunity to gain an insight into the working world, allowing us to discover what exactly the realm of working is like and further enabling us to pursue an industry we are currently interested in.

For me, as one who has always firmly embodied the statement of ‘dream BIG or go home’, it was securing a place at the well-renowned Neurosurgery and Spinal Surgery firm, BrizBrain & Spine located in the Evan Thompson Building at the Wesley Hospital in Brisbane. Thanks to one of the extremely lovely and organized members of staff, I have experienced five truly amazing days of never-ending excitement and learning.  From spending approximately 16 glorious hours (for my behalf, not so much the patient) watching operations and being continuously amazed at the magic that these neurosurgeons work,  to scrubbing up in blue scrubs and all, it was on these moments that I was if not, more excited than a child on Christmas day! Even working clinics with the extremely caring ladies of BrizBrain, assisting in writing invoices, making payments with the credit card machine, faxing, photocopying, scanning …. even I found these often coined ‘boring’ jobs fun, leading me to question just why do adults in the working world complain about such amusing tasks?  And it did not end there, I also got to spend time at Premion  and have my  very own exposure to Neuro Oncology with the incredibly nice and humorous Dr. David Schlect.  And additionally, observing MRI, CAT and PET scans and X-rays at Wesley Medical Imaging.

On a side note, I would like to acknowledge and thank all the members of staff and surgeons that are the foundations of this brilliant company for allowing my dream week to become a mind-blowing, extraordinary reality, giving me an experience and memories that I know I will never be able to forget.
