Dr Stephen Byrne, Research Fellow

BrizBrain and Spine announces the arrival of Research Fellow, Dr Stephen Byrne.

Dr Byrne graduated from the University of Aberdeen and has worked in Adelaide, New Zealand and London prior to joining the team.

Dr Byrne will be undertaking his Research Fellowship with the Newro Foundation and will perform as a surgical assistant at regular intervals with our surgeons to further his knowledge.

“This year, I’ll primarily be working with Dr Walker at QIMR investigating how common viruses interact with malignant brain tumours.  This has the potential to reveal new therapeutic options for what is essentially an incurable disease.  My research is part of a Masters degree at Queensland University.”

“I also intend to undertake some minor projects looking at outcomes following spinal surgery.  Working with these specialists is a fantastic and rare opportunity for neurosurgical trainees in Australia, as most training is generally carried out in public hospitals.  Ultimately, I intend to specialise in both brain tumour surgery and spinal surgery so my experience at BrizBrain and Spine and Newro Foundation will be highly beneficial to my training.”
